The admitted murderer of an Orange police officer was sentenced to 40 years in prison Thursday.
Raynard Brown pleaded guilty to the 2006 murder of Detective Keiran Sheilds in January. Brown's 40 year sentence will be tacked on to the 14 years he is already serving for a robbery conviction.
Sheilds' relatives confronted the officer's killer in court at the sentencing. The family says they are still grieving after 18 months.
"It feels like a nuclear bomb hit us," said Sheilds' mother, Brenda Shields. "We are still suffering every day. The fallout is still with us every day"
Brown addressed Sheilds' family. He defended himself by saying the officer was killed in the crossfire during a clash with another man.
"I just need for you to understand I was just trying to protect my family," said Brown. "If you [were] me, you would have done the same thing."
