Former state Sen. Joe Coniglio has been found guilty of mail fraud and extortion.
Coniglio was accused of using his position on the Senate Budget Committee to steer $3.1 million to Hackensack University Medical Center where he took a low-show job. The hospital paid Coniglio $5,000 a month for services as a 'consultant'.
The verdict came after four days of deliberation and a three-week trial. He was convicted on one count of extortion and five counts of mail fraud, but acquitted on two counts of mail fraud. The jury was deadlocked on a final mail fraud count.
The former lawmaker faces 20 years in prison for each of the six counts he was convicted on.
