A
proposal out of New York received
a key approval Tuesday, and if approved, drivers would be charged an
additional toll to enter Manhattan.
The plan would make New York the first city in the country states to implement
congestion pricing.
It received a key approval Tuesday
from the Federal Highway Administration, saying in a letter that New York will
need an environmental assessment to make sure there would be no significant
environmental impacts.
They are also requiring a public
comment period. If approved, drivers will be charged an additional toll to
enter Manhattan. The hope is the congestion pricing would in turn reduce
congestion and raise money for public transit systems.
State leaders from New York had initially predicted the plan would be in
place this year, but it was out on hold with a lack of guidance from the former
federal administration.
