A school bus driver has been fired after he supposedly left two young children on his bus.
The children, believed to be kindergarteners, were picked up at Spruce Street School in Lakewood Tuesday, but never made it to their bus stop. They were found alone inside the bus parked at the Durham School Services bus lot.
A source close to the incident tells News 12 New Jersey that another bus driver found the children at around 5 p.m. However, a spokesperson for the bus company says that the children were only unattended for 30 minutes.
All drivers are required to check their buses at the end of each shift. They are supposed to walk to the back of the bus and tape a sign on the back window that says the bus is empty. The company spokesperson tells News 12 New Jersey that the driver did not do this. As a result, he has been let go.
The children were not harmed in any way.
The Lakewood school superintendent did not return News 12 New Jersey's calls for comment.
