Gov. Jon Corzine appeared in Atlantic City Tuesday to award five leases to companies interested in developing windmills off the New Jersey coast.
Corzine was accompanied by Interior Secretary Ken Salazar. No offshore wind farms have been built yet in the United States, though there are several in Europe. Supporters say the technology is gaining popularity worldwide.
Corzine says the wind farms would create ?green collar? or eco-friendly jobs in New Jersey. Opponents say the wind farms could ruin the view of the horizon, destroy seabeds and pose a hazard to birds.
