A community is in mourning after a beloved bodega worker was shot and killed in Newark Tuesday morning.
Officials say Felix Rosario, 55, was killed while working behind the counter of Dalbert Grocery on Runyon Street. He was taken to University Hospital, but was pronounced dead at 9:16 a.m.
A spokesperson for the Essex County Prosecutor's Office says someone came into the shop, shot Rosario and then left. The spokesperson could not say whether Rosario was specifically targeted or if robbery was a motive.
Neighbors in the area say Rosario was loved in the community and could not understand why anyone would want to harm him.
"I never had a problem with him. He used to always compliment me on my cars," says Mitch Muhammad.
Some residents admitted that gun crimes happen in the area, but lamented that Rosario would be the latest victim.
"It's very sad, because everybody around here is always getting shot and killed for no reason," says Keyini Brown.
Authorities weren't able to provide a description of the shooting suspect. Anyone who might have any information about the shooting is asked to call the Essex County Prosecutor's Tip Line at 1-877-847-7432.
