A group of community leaders and Jersey City residents are suing Mayor Steven Fulop over plans to relocate a monument dedicated to World War II veterans.

The Katyn Massacre Memorial honors the 22,000 Polish military members killed in the war.

The statue currently sits along the Jersey City waterfront. But there are plans to redevelop the area into a park, and Fulop wants to move the statue to another relocation.

“If they want to redo a park area, leave the statue alone. Do not move it. Do not touch it. Just leave it alone and let it stay,” says Jersey City Councilman Richard Borggiano.

The plans to move the statue were met with harsh criticism from Polish-Americans and even the president of Poland himself.

A rally will be held Sunday near the memorial to raise awareness on keeping the statue in its original location.
