It had to happen. It happens every year. We shouldn't be surprised that the temperatures get cold in December. And we aren't. I'm here to tell you though that late Thursday night into Friday morning is air we haven't felt since last February - 268 days in fact.
So, while we aren't surprised it's going to be cold, I just want you to be prepared for this incoming bitter blast.
The air is straight form Hudsons Bay Canada. Arctic in nature, and the airmass has temps that are well below the seasonable average.
Morning lows are usually expected to be around 34 degrees. We'll be lucky if our daytime highs warm to that.
On top of the cold, there will be a breeze. The wind is moving body heat away from the body, and that's why it feels colder.
Most New Jersey neighborhoods will feel as if it is 0 to 10 degrees above Friday morning. If you aren't prepared for that type of cold. Waiting for the bus or train to get you to wherever you are going will be dangerous and uncomfortable.
The upper-level steering winds in the atmosphere are dipping towards the Carolinas. This allows that cold air from Canada to spill over the border. This weather pattern will likely be this way for the next 10 to possibly 14 days. While I don't anticipate breaking and cold record temps, we will be flirting with them.
