A nearly 70-foot fishing boat with three people on board ran aground over the weekend at the southern tip of Island Beach State Park – and is still there.
The scallop boat named BEAR was on its way back to the docks at Viking Village near Barnegat Light early Saturday when it got stuck on a sand bar.
According to the Coast Guard, the captain and two crew members were not hurt.
The boat remains stuck though. The Coast Guard removed over 2,300 gallons of fuel to mitigate the chance of pollution. Crews also removed and saved the boats' catch -- 11 bags of scallops
Future plans include to refloat the vessel once weather permits.
A representative from Viking Village on Long Beach Island says they will try again Tuesday. Conditions Monday are just not safe enough to put people near the stranded vessel.
