Civil unions may be on the fast track to becoming a reality in New Jersey.
The Assembly Judiciary Committee heard testimony Thursday from those on both sides of the gay marriage and civil union issue. The committee later passed a bill forming civil unions. Those who support gay marriage are not in favor of the bill, which uses the term civil unions instead of marriage. Those against gay marriage are also against the bill. Groups against gay marriage say civil unions go farther than necessary.
Although neither side likes the idea of civil unions in the Garden State, some lawmakers say civil unions may be the only option, at least for now. A Senate committee will hear testimony about the bill Monday. The final vote on the bill could be in the next two weeks.
