New Jersey is now officially the “Garden State.”
Gov. Chris Christie signed legislation Monday that officially designates “Garden State” as New Jersey’s state slogan.
Although "Garden State" has appeared on the state's license plates since 1954, it was never actually made the state’s official slogan. A New Jersey Girl Scout troop discovered the omission, according to state Sen. Jim Whelan, who advanced the bill earlier this year.
The bill was one of 50 measures the governor signed Monday, including a law that gives towns the ability to treat smoking violations as civil offenses instead of criminal offenses and a repeal of a law going back to at least 1877 on what millers could charge for grinding grain.
