The infamous photo of Gov. Chris Christie and his family sitting on the beach during the New Jersey government shutdown is among the top 10 photos of 2017, according to
TIME Magazine.
The shutdown this past July meant that state parks across New Jersey were closed to the public for most of the Fourth of July holiday weekend.
But Christie and his family spent the weekend at Island Beach State Park at the state-owned governor’s property.
A photographer with New Jersey Advance Media took the photo from the air, after originally going up to photograph the empty beaches during the holiday weekend. But then stumbled upon Christie and his family.
“I saw a single cluster of beachgoers on miles of empty, pristine beach,” photographer Andrew Mills told the magazine.
Christie came under fire after the photo surfaced because he told reporters that he “didn’t get any sun” on the day the photo was taken.
The governor was criticized for utilizing the beach while so many other New Jerseyans had to cancel their plans during the holiday weekend.
Other photos included in the TIME list include photos from the mass shooting in Las Vegas, the United the Right Rally in Charlottesville and a photo of an emaciated polar bear in Canada.
