A Cherry Hill waitress is being hailed as a hero for saving an elderly couple from their burning home.
Kelly Ann Bacho works at the Cherry Hill Diner. She has only been working at the diner for a few months, but says that she knows many of her regulars, including Jimmy and Joan Behlau who live around the corner from the diner.
Bacho says that on Sunday she was driving to work and noticed that the Behlaus’ home was on fire.
“I saw flames shooting out of the attic,” Bacho says. “I just jumped out of the truck and ran into the house and told them the house was on fire.”
An electrical fire had sparked in the attic and had not reached the first floor of the home, so the couple did not know about the fire.
Bacho was able to get Jimmy Behlau out of the home, but Joan was still inside.
"So I ran back into the house after I got him out,” Bacho says.
But Joan Behlau is in a wheelchair, so getting her out of the home was difficult.
"I had to put her in the wheelchair and carry her down the stairs - in the wheelchair,” says Bacho.
The Cherry Hill Fire Department arrived at the Birch Street home within minutes and put out the fire. The home can be salvaged with some major repairs.
The couple has lived in the home for about 50 years. They say that it won’t be easy to leave.
"My heart is breaking because we've lived here a long time,” says Joan Behlau.
The fire is considered to be accidental. No one was hurt.
