Public health officials say a salmonella outbreak from fresh papayas imported from Mexico is effecting several states, including New Jersey.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 60 people in eight states have gotten sick this year after catching salmonella.

In New Jersey, the CDC says at least 12 people in eight different counties have reported getting sick after eating the fruit.

The outbreak has hospitalized 23 people in total, but no deaths have been reported.

Most of the people who became sick in the outbreak were adults over 60.
