Dan Sohail, of Carteret, has been arrested in Brooklyn for ramming his car into the front door of a Jewish synagogue on Wednesday evening.
Police are still trying to determine if it was a hate crime or if Sohail was experiencing a mental health crisis.
The 36-year old was inside of his black Honda Accord before being pulled by police from the car at the Chabad Lubavitch Headquarters in Crown Heights.
A day earlier, the rabbi at the Carteret Jewish Community Center says Sohail was at his facility taking part in a prayer service.
But after that service, the rabbi says he became angered after getting his car stuck in the snow.
He started cursing at students helping to shovel out his car and was asked to leave.
But the rabbi says Sohail never said anything antisemitic.
After the incident in Crown Heights, the police commissioner said they’re trying to determine exactly why this happened.
“We’re still very early in this investigation, as to his mental state and I have not heard of any weapons that were recovered at this time,” said NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch.
A woman inside declined to comment at Sohail’s home in Carteret.
