Candidates for governor express support for Puerto Rico
The New Jersey Puerto Rican Congress Convention usually addresses the current state of the Puerto Rican community in New Jersey. But this year, it took a backseat to the humanitarian disaster that has unfolded on the hurricane-stricken island.
New Jersey's gubernatorial candidates, Republican Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno and Democratic candidate Phil Murphy, took a brief timeout from campaigning Saturday to voice their support for hurricane relief in Puerto Rico. Each separately served as feature speakers at Saturday's convention.
"We have many differences of opinion, but Puerto Rico isn't one of them," Murphy said.
"If you all want to talk politics, call me back because  I'm not going to do that today," Guadagno said.
Both expressed the need to stand by Puerto Rico in the months of recovery ahead.
