One of the many disappointments caused by the COVID-19 pandemic was the cancellation of high school spring musicals.
But now thanks to the Axelrod Performing Arts Center, student performers may get their moment in the spotlight and a chance to win some money.
The Deal-based performing center produces nearly 10 professional musicals a year. And now the center has created the Axe Awards – a showcase offering cash prizes to students cast in a lead or supporting role in their canceled high school musicals.
Four seniors will win $1,000 for the best actress and actor in a supporting role and lead role. Underclassmen will receive $500.
There will be six prizes in all. Students must submit a video of them singing a song from their canceled show by May 8. Only students living in Middlesex, Monmouth and Ocean counties are eligible.
The theater will choose finalists and the winners will be selected in an online public vote.
