In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, News 12’s New Jersey’s Karina Gerry spoke with Janell Simpson who made history as the first Latina deputy police chief in Camden County.
Born and raised in Camden, Simpson says she recognizes the importance of people seeing someone who looks just like them in uniform.
"I love being Hispanic. I'm still traditional in everything…and I'm true to my culture. It's very important to me and that's what I was raised on,” Simpson said.
Latinos make up over 50% of the population in Camden.
