One day after a deadly crash on Route 539 in New Egypt, there are calls for increased police patrols and improvements to the road to prevent more tragedies.
The latest crash involved two teenagers on their way back to college. Alexander Pannizzo, 18, died after the car he was riding in crashed head-on with a tractor trailer. Police say that the driver of the car, 19-year-old Dylan Magee, lost control and veered off into the other lane.
People who drive on Route 539 say that the amount of curves on the road and the 50 mph speed limit may be to blame. Pannizzo was the 15th person killed on the roadway this year. Ocean County officials say that speed bumps and reflective striping will be installed this spring. Rumble strips are also expected to be installed in the middle of the road to help reduce the chance that drivers cross the center line.
In addition, red-colored pavement is expected to be installed at six curves on Route 539, which may help prevent drivers from skidding if they suddenly stop.
This past summer, the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office and local police increased traffic enforcement on the road. The investigation yielded more than 150 tickets and 10 arrests.
