Building fire in Jersey City sends 6 people to the hospital, including 4 police officers
A large building fire in Jersey people sent six people, including four police officers, to the hospital.
The fire was first reported around 10:45 p.m. Wednesday at 10 Sherman Place. A Jersey City police officer made the call about a fire in the rear yard of the building.
Officials say the fire eventually spread to the whole three-story building.
They say that when firefighters arrived, they found Jersey City police officers helping residents evacuate to safety. The fire was brought under control shortly after.
Officials say that two residents were taken to Jersey City Medical Center and released. Four police officers were also taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. They were also released.
Four cats were found dead inside the building.
The American Red Cross assisted nine residents who were displaced.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
