At the corner of Flatbush and Flatlands avenues, a ribbon hangs alongside a street sign that bears the name William J. Gormley, a first responder on Sept. 11, 2001.  

Gormley was a devoted dad and husband​ who rushed to ground zero after the 9/11 attacks. His time working at ground zero led him to pay the ultimate sacrifice when he died from cancer in 2017.  

He served nearly two decades in Ladder 174 for East Flatbush before his passing, but his daughters are still in mourning as the 21st anniversary of 9/11 approaches.  

Gormley is one of nearly 300 FDNY members who officials say have died from 9/11-related illnesses.  

His daughter, Bridget, plans to keep her dad’s name alive with a 9/11 documentary she hopes to release in the coming months.
