A Bridgeport City Council member is doing everything she can to try to help get her sons and husband out of war-torn Sudan.

The men traveled to the country to comfort an ailing relative but then found themselves unable to get home even as U.S. embassy personnel were evacuated. City Council Member Samia Suliman is hoping for her family's safe return as the danger around them shows no sign of stopping.

The family was supposed to take off for home earlier this month, but after fighting between the military and another group damaged the airport, they could not leave. She says her family has witnessed warfare in the capital and bodies in the streets.

The U.S. has removed embassy workers and their families but has instructed other Americans to shelter in place.

Suliman's daughter spoke with News 12 about what her brothers Ahmed and Musa Elsheikh are experiencing.

"I could hear gunshots and they were telling me that the walls were shaking where they were just because of how close they were in proximity to the conflict," said Fatima El-Sheikh.

El-Sheikh says her brothers are in their 20s and don't know the language or the city well.

Both Bridgeport Mayor Joe Ganim and Sen. Richard Blumenthal are trying to put pressure on the State Department to help the family and other Americans in a similar situation.
