The mayor of Brick Township submitted his letter of resignation Wednesday amid a federal corruption investigation into the township.
Mayor Joseph Scarpelli will be stepping down as mayor effective 12:01 a.m. Saturday. He has appointed Municipal Clerk Virginia Lampman as the interim mayor. For many in the township, his resignation comes as no surprise. Scarpelli?s letter cites personal reasons for his decision. However, some wonder if his resignation has anything to do with the corruption probe into the township. Others wonder if his decision is due to the arrest of the former public works director.
Meanwhile, the FBI has subpoenaed records from the township, but there is no word on whether Scarpelli is the focus of the probe.
