Brick police are on the hunt for two men who installed an ATM skimmer inside a machine at the Ocean First Bank.
According to the police, a man came into the bank on Chambers Bridge Road on May 2 and installed the device in the machine. He may have been wearing a disguise at the time.
Another man returned several hours later to remove the device, which by that time was loaded with account information. Several unsuspecting bankers had their bank information stolen and fraudulent purchases were made.
Police are not only looking for the culprits, they are also warning bank patrons what to look for to watch out for such devices.
"Look for anything that looks out of the ordinary or that appears bulky on the machine," says Brick Police Sgt. Neal Pedersen.
Sgt. Pedersen says the devices are often homemade and are made to blend into the ATM. "Spy" cameras are often installed as well to catch patrons keying in their PIN.
"Be aware of your surroundings when you go into these places," Pedersen says. "Shield your PIN when you pump your numbers into the machine."
Anyone who may be able to identify the men is urged to call the Brick Police Detective Bureau at 732-262-1120.
