Brick Township employees are being forced to wear several hats due to the layoffs of their colleagues.
Forty-two employees have been let go by the township in cost-cutting maneuvers. Another 38 positions left open by retirements and resignations have also been eliminated, including six police positions.
The township?s double-dipping is being done to eliminate ?inefficient downtime,? according to Mayor Stephen Acropolis. Tasks once done by specific workers are being added to the responsibilities of those still employed. Workers who once focused on building repairs have taken on janitorial and ground maintenance jobs. The tasks of Brick?s drainage and paving crews have been added to other positions.
"We're trying to take up the slack of the people laid off, trying to multi-task, trying to tighten everything up," says Acropolis.
Brick?s four full-time bus drivers were also among those let go, and properly licensed public works employees have taken on those responsibilities.
Some services are also being shared with nearby Toms River to share money.
