A doctor in Brick Township is the first in the state to begin using an infrared screening device to help detect breast cancer. Dr. Alfred Parchment says the Sentinel Breast Scan can help doctors detect cancer-causing changes in a woman?s breast much sooner than a mammography alone. A growth or tumor draws more heat than normal tissue. The device finds those hot spots.Unlike a mammogram, doctors are encouraging woman as young as 18 to be scanned. They say there is no discomfort and no waiting for results. Dr. Parchment says the Sentinel should be used in conjunction with a mammogram. He also says no test can take the place of women performing self-exams on a monthly basis.
