Controversy surrounds Secaucus-based food company Goya Foods, after its CEO publicly praised President Donald Trump.
Goya Food's CEO Robert Unanue praised President Trump in a speech as the president hosted some Hispanic leaders at the White House.
Unanue said, "We're all truly blessed at the same time to have a leader like President Trump, who is a builder, and that's what my grandfather did. He came to this country to build, to grow, to prosper, and so we have an incredible builder and we pray, we pray for our leadership, our president and we pray for our country, that we will continue to prosper and grow."
The president responded to the comment in a tweet, saying, “I LOVE @GoyaFoods!”
After the statement, hashtags such as #boycottgoya and #goyaway started trending on Twitter. Politicians, celebrities and others said they will boycott Goya, citing things like verbiage the president used regarding Latino immigrants to get elected, to border and DACA policies.
Others are also supporting a "buy-cott" of Goya Foods, saying they'll buy more of the brand to support its CEO and the president.
Goya has not released a statement.
The company was founded in 1936 by Spanish migrants, and calls itself the largest Hispanic-owned company in the U.S.
