A 9-year-old Brooklyn boy found unresponsive in a swimming pool at a South Jersey water park has been laid to rest.
Hersh Grossman was at Sahara Sam's Indoor-Outdoor Waterpark in Berlin as part of a class trip with the Belzer Talmud Torah of Borough Park. Police responded to the scene around 7:35 p.m. Tuesday after being told a child there was in cardiac arrest.
Officers found lifeguards performing CPR on the boy, who was unconscious when he was removed from the water. He was taken to a hospital but was pronounced dead there a short time later.
A funeral was held for Grossman Wednesday afternoon. The community came together to help the boy’s family.
"The mood in the community is extremely painful. There's a lot of solidarity here, and everyone feels as if it’s a member of their family. It’s a close community, everybody knows each other and everybody feels the pain from this tragic event,” says a family spokesperson.
The death remains under investigation but is not considered suspicious.
Sahara Sam's released a statement to News 12 New Jersey which said, "We are deeply saddened by the incident, which occurred during a private event, and our prayers are with the family and friends at this difficult time. We are completing a thorough review of the incident are working with authorities."
