Questions are revolving around a Bayonne fire in which it took investigators almost 24 hours to find out someone had died in the incident.
The fire occurred Sunday at 134 West 11th St. On Monday, investigators were surprised to find the body of 33-year-old Baghat Mosaad inside the home after everyone had apparently been accounted for.
Investigators met with Bayonne police and fire officials Tuesday to discuss the incident and what could have went wrong. Officials also listened to the radio conversations from emergency crews.
A bystander claims he warned authorities someone might be inside the burning home. Police acknowledge they got the warning and passed it on to firefighters.
?That information was appropriately referred to the fire officials on the scene, fire officials [then] acted appropriately with their follow-up,? Bayonne Police Director Mark Smith said.
?The firefighters had 15 names and they said all 15 people are accounted for, that?s what I know,? Smith said.
The city?s law director, Jay Coffey, said investigators are trying to determine exactly who gave the list of names to the fire department. ?We had 15 names and apparently there was a 16th individual who was in there,? Coffey said. ?[I] don?t know why we didn?t get that information.?
Authorities said the house is registered as a two-family home, but there are five units inside. There is also confusion on who actually owns the building.
