The first snowstorm of 2018 is responsible for hundreds of flight cancellations and delays and has temporarily suspended service at two New York airports.

Over 1,000 flights were canceled at Newark Liberty International Airport by Thursday afternoon, over 70 percent of normal flight activity. Flights were still taking off and arriving, but there were many delays.

Similar scenarios were seen at New York City airports. Port Authority officials said all flights were temporarily suspended at John F. Kennedy International Airport and LaGuardia Airport due to whiteout conditions and strong winds.

Port Authority of New York and New Jersey officials said the organization has more than 500 pieces of snow equipment at its airports, including melters that can liquefy up to 500 tons of snow an hour and plows that can clear snow at 40 mph.

Anyone with a scheduled flight is advised to call the carrier to check the status of flights. Several airlines were offering cancellation and change waivers.
