Demonstrators with the Black Lives Matter movement held a protest in front of Paterson City Hall to demand answers after a police-involved shooting that happened Saturday.
The shooting happened in front of the Paterson police headquarters. Friends and family identified the victim as Larry "Sincere" Bouie, who remains hospitalized in critical condition.
Paterson police say that Bouie was acting erratically and was shot by a female officer.
The demonstrators are demanding that authorities release the officer's name and they want to know why the shooting happened. They are calling on the Paterson City Council for help.
"We want the council to know that we need to policy to back up these demands," says BLM activist Alexis Miller. "We want a transparency bill that releases this information without us having to ask for it."
Paterson Councilman Luis Velez says the police investigation must run a proper course.
"I believe the answer will come soon. I just want them to be patient," he says.
But the group says they fear the investigation may not happen in a timely manner.
"We're asking for simple things: The name of the officer and surveillance footage," Miller says. "Those are things that don't take very long to provide to the public."
So far no charges have been filed against Bouie or the officer.
