HEADLINES:
- On target for generally 3 inches of snow across the island. Up to 6 inches is possible on the north shore.
- Conditions are good this morning and fair midday. Snow rapidly accumulates after 5 p.m. and through 3 a.m. tonight.
- Bitter cold overnight tonight. Severe cold lingers on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.
We're on track for our biggest snowstorm so far this season on Long Island with several inches of snow expected. Our forecast calls for a slightly later start time which means the temperatures will be colder and there is a better chance a few neighborhoods will see closer to 6 inches of snow. In general, most of the island will see 4 inches of snow, but spots in Nassau County and the north shore will be in the sweet spot for locally higher totals.
A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect after 1 p.m. Accumulating snow will make driving difficult this evening and reduced visibility will cause travel slowdowns starting this afternoon.
TIMING:
Dry conditions are expected this morning with temperatures above freezing. A few snow showers will arrive at 1 p.m., but accumulation is not expected right away. Some of the snow may even mix with rain before 5 p.m.
The worst weather begins around 3-6 p.m. At this point, temperatures start to drop, the wind picks up, and snow will accumulate quickly. Clear roads will quickly become snow covered this evening. Snow continues until about 3 a.m. and dry, cold weather is expected on Monday.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
The snow will be mixed with sleet and rain to start. It's best to clear out this round of snow this evening before temperatures crash overnight. Temperatures tonight will drop into the teens and turn the bottom of the snowpack into a sheet of ice.
Visibility will be reduced even with early snow showers, but accumulation may be slow to start and pick up quickly when it gets dark.
THE WEEK AHEAD:
Bitter cold weather is expected on Tuesday and Wednesday morning. Temperatures will be in the single digits, but it will feel like 0F or even colder in some neighborhoods. A weak disturbance could bring snow flurries Tuesday night into Wednesday. We're tracking another coastal storm Thursday night into Friday that could also bring additional snow showers. Stay tuned for the latest updates. An active storm pattern is expected for at least the next two weeks.
TODAY: Mostly cloudy to start with highs near 40. Snow develops after noon and will be heavy after 5 p.m. Snow tappers off after midnight.
