Another outbreak of avian bird flu is decimating the swan population at a lake in the middle of Point Pleasant Beach.
This comes just a week after a separate outbreak in Ocean County led to 80 chickens, ducks and geese having to be euthanized at the Popcorn Park Zoo.
News 12’s Jim Murdoch visited the Lake of the Lilies at Point Pleasant Beach, where at least 30 swans, a duck and a goose have already fallen victim to the virus.
Mayor Paul Kanitra says he's heartbroken by those recent losses.
Although it is extremely rare for humans to contract bird flu, the town has put up warning notices along the lake and advises people to avoid contact with birds.
With several outbreaks now reported in Ocean County, the staff at Jenkinson’s Aquarium is keeping a close watch over their animals.
“It is definitely a concern. Penguins unfortunately are susceptible to avian influenza,” said Nicole Ginsburg, the aquarium’s penguin supervisor.
Jenkinson's has taken extensive measures such as canceling all behind the scenes tours.
Mayor Kanitra says most of the birds are not showing symptoms, and he's hoping it will run its course quickly through this population.
