More than 100 motorcyclists rode through Newark Saturday to raise money for breast cancer patients in need.
The riders, who are part of the Bikers Against Breast Cancer organization, say in addition to raising more than $1,000 they hope to raise awareness about the disease. The organization was created four years ago by Sheila Green-Barnhill, and all proceeds go directly to patients in need of financial help.
Barnhill says she receives nearly 100 phone calls a week from breast cancer patients who are struggling to pay their bills. Her organization provides each applicant with $300.
Doctors say about 6,000 women in New Jersey will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year and that the disease is 95 percent curable. Carl Walrond, whose mother died of breast cancer when he was 5 years old, says the annual motorcycle ride is the least he can do to remind people to get checked.
