Big Brother may soon catch red-light runners in New Jersey if lawmakers pass a traffic light camera bill.
Lawmakers are contemplating a two-year pilot program that would allow towns to install cameras to catch red-light runners. Many say those who run red lights are the leading cause of traffic accidents.Proponents of the bill say the cameras would cut down on the number of crashes at intersections. Opponents say just the opposite would happen. They contend drivers who don?t want tickets will slam on the brakes at the first sign of a yellow light, causing more rear-end collisions.
Other critics feel the cameras aren?t about traffic enforcement, but all about making more money.
The red-light camera bill is expected to be go before the full Assembly for a vote later in June.
