A family is suing a Bergen County medical facility after a young woman was left partially paralyzed and in a coma following an abortion. Michelle Lewis, mother of 20-year-old Rasheedah Dinkins, said her daughter had cramps, fatigue and extreme bleeding when she returned home from her procedure at Metropolitan Medical Associates. Lewis says she called the clinic, which told her to call an ambulance. Dinkins nearly died on the way to the hospital and was forced to undergo an emergency hysterectomy because of the severe damage to her uterus. Dinkins? attorney says she was unconscious and sedated for three weeks. The immense blood loss caused serious respiratory distress, forcing her to depend on a ventilator to breathe. Dinkins also suffered a stroke as a result of the bleeding, causing partial paralysis. Hospital officials were so shocked by the damage Dinkins sustained during the abortion procedure, they reported the clinic to the New Jersey Department of Health. As a result, the Metropolitan Medical Associates has been shut down for investigation.
