A beloved Bergen County crossing guard suffered severe head and leg injuries after being struck by a car Wednesday.
Westwood police say Cyril Kearney was walking a woman across the street at the intersection of Berkeley and Harrington avenues when he was struck by a Subaru. The accident happened in front of Berkeley Elementary School.
Kearney, who is in his 70s, has been in the community since 2009. He is a well-known figure in town.
"He's here rain or shine or snow," says neighbor Giovanni Lamarta. "I'd feel bad if it was anybody, but I feel even more because we see him every day and how he treats the kids."
A man who says he is the husband of the driver of the Subaru says that something got into his wife's eye right before she hit Kearney.
Police say as of now, she will not face any charges. There is no information available on Kearney's condition.
