A Monmouth County town is offering free beach access and parking today as part of an effort to help a small beachfront town in Texas recover from Harvey.
Belmar Mayor Matt Doherty launched the effort to raise money for Rockport, Texas because of its similarities in size and location to Belmar.
“They are in a very similar position we were in after Sandy," said Mayor Doherty.
Donation boxes will be set up where beachgoers usually show their badges for entry into the beach.
The Borough Council is expected to adopt Rockport Tuesday as a sister city to formalize the arrangement.
Mayor Doherty is expected to deliver the funds raised himself, using his own money to pay for a trip to Rockport.
D'Jais Bar & Grill on Ocean Avenue is also participating in a Harvey relief effort and has made a commitment to donate all proceeds from the restaurant’s $5 cover charge on Labor Day. The establishment has pledged a minimum of $5,000 even before any such money has been collected
