Two Bayonne city workers are suspended without pay, accused of collecting sports bets for an organized crime operation.
Bayonne Mayor Mark Smith says other municipal workers could be fired as the investigation continues. Police say betting slips were left for pickup in mailboxes around the city and then collected on city time by Peter Jahera, 54 and Kenneth Jaworski, 47. The two are facing gambling, conspiracy and official misconduct charges.
"We will prosecute these two to the fullest extent of the law, criminally and administratively,? Smith says.
Police Chief Robert Kubert say Jahera and Jaworski may have wasted hundreds of hours of the city?s time.
Also arrested after the three-month investigation were Thomas Brett Jr., of Bayonne, and Anthony Grasso, of Hasbrouck Heights. They too are facing gambling and conspiracy charges.
