The Bayonne Bridge project has been finished seven months before its projected completion date.
The $1.3 billion project that began in 2013 raised the span’s deck 64 feet in order to allow larger ships to port in the region.
The Coast Guard now certifies that the bridge is high enough to accommodate all major shipping lines.
Gov. Chris Christie emphasized the construction would help bring more business and income to the state.
Work will continue on the bridge through 2019 though, with crews building the bridge to its full width to allow for a safer roadway.
