Jersey City has launched a free online tool that allows renters to quickly find out if their apartment is rent controlled.

Residents can enter their address to check the status of their building. Mayor James Solomon says the tool replaces an outdated system that relied on paper files and handwritten records at City Hall.

“For decades, the information on if your building was rent controlled or not lived in paper files and handwritten charts inside boxes in City Hall,” Solomon said.

The city is still adding buildings to the database. Renters who believe their landlord has illegally raised their rent can also contact the city for help.
