A legal battle is brewing in Ocean County about where to house the homeless.

The borough of Seaside Heights wants to limit welfare placements in its motels. The borough makes up 1 percent of the county, but takes 66 percent of its emergency homeless placements. Borough Administrator John Camera says that is an unfair burden to schools and taxpayers.

The borough passed a law last year that limits homeless placement to 15 percent of motels. However, some motel owners filed a lawsuit saying the law is discriminatory and would cause them to lose money. The borough counter sued stating the county should spread the homeless out more evenly.

The two sides are still in the discovery phase of the lawsuits. No trial date has been set.
