Family members say there were no warning signs before a man allegedly slammed his 3-month-old daughter into the pavement in Palisades Park Saturday.
Peter Olmeda, 29, is being held on $1 million bail while undergoing a psychiatric evaluation at the Bergen Regional Medical Center in Paramus. He's expected to appear in court sometime this week to face formal charges.
Police say Olmeda dropped the child and mother off at their home around 11:30 p.m. Saturday when he asked to hold the baby. According to police, Olmeda grabbed the baby by her ankles, slammed her against a railing and threw her on the pavement. Police say neighbors caught Olmeda as he tried to flee while his daughter was dying.
A makeshift memorial now sits at the home. A neighbor expressed outrage and disbelief over the incident, saying Olmeda deserves to die.
Relatives say there were no fights or drug use that could explain the incident. The baby's mother, who watched as her daughter was killed, is reportedly in the care of a psychiatrist.
