(01/07/08) NEWARK (AP) - Union County Prosecutor Theodore Romankow is complaining that the Rev. Al Sharpton's organization didn't contact his office about the possibility of arranging the peaceful surrender of an escaped inmate. Romankow says he wants Otis Blunt's immediate surrender. Sharpton meanwhile is saying he's prepared to move within the next 24 to 48 hours to personally see if he can facilitate Blunt's surrender. Sharpton says he's been contacted by people in touch with Blunt, one of two inmates who escaped Dec. 15th from the Union County Jail in Elizabeth. County Police Chief Daniel Vaniska says he doesn't know who's contacted Sharpton on behalf of Blunt. Blunt, 32, of Toms River, and Jose Espinosa, 20, of Elizabeth, made a daring escape from the jail -- the first breakout since the jail opened in 1986.
