A serial tire-slasher has returned to Manville for the fourth time.
Manville police say that 42 tires were slashed on North 8th Avenue and a car was set on fire.
People who live on the street say that they were awoken around 3 a.m. Wednesday to the sound of an explosion. While walking outside to see what was happening, they noticed that a Subaru was on fire. The owner of the vehicle says that this is the second time that his car had been burned.
Neighbor Luis Perez was a bit more fortunate. Only two of his tires were slashed.
“Looked outside. There it was again, Déjà vu,” he says.
The slasher damaged a tire on Perez’s daughter’s car and one tire on his wife’s car.
“The way he does it, he doesn’t just slash it. He punctures it very slightly so it doesn’t blow out,” says Perez. “It loses air slowly.”
This has become a serious problem in the town, so the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit is investigating. The last time the vandal struck, 80 tires were destroyed.
Authorities have surveillance video from a prior incident, but have not been able to identify the suspect.
“You’re dealing with the pandemic and you’re out of work. I’m trying to hold on to what I’ve got and these are expensive tires,” says Perez.
Perez says that he would rather spend money on the things that he wants and not on the things that he needs.
No arrests have been made. Anyone who may have information should contact the police.
