A 33-year-old Plainfield man is recovering from a gunshot wound after he was shot while trying to wrestle a bag of money away from an armored truck guard.
The Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office says that Wayne Township police called to the Bank of America on the 700 block of Hamburg Turnpike for reports of a shooting.
Authorities say that the man approached one of the guards of the truck as he was leaving the bank and tried to steal the cash bags that the guard was carrying. A struggle ensued and prosecutors say that the guard’s gun went off and that the suspect was shot.
A witness tells News 12 New Jersey that she saw the suspect on a stretcher.
“I actually saw him come out on the stretcher. He was all covered in black, I didn't see any face. I thought he was actually dead in a bag because it was all black. But I went out here and asked, ‘Should I lock the doors?’ and [a police officer] said, ‘No, everything's fine. We got the bad guy,’” the witness said.
The suspect, who was not identified, was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition.
Authorities did not say what charges the man could be facing.
