Authorities investigate 250 instances of stolen mail in Teaneck
The Teaneck Police Department is investigating 250 instances of mail fraud and stolen checks in the town.
Police say that the mail was taken from mailboxes or from cars and that the checks were doctored so that the fraudsters could cash them.
"So, one of the things they do is they wash it. Basically, wipe it clean of the ink that's on it - what the victim would have wrote on it. Then they will endorse the check to whatever name they want, or whatever fake name they want,” says Detective Kenneth Egbert.
The police department and United States Postal Service is investigating.
