A 39-year-old Irvington man was shot and killed in a police shootout that left three police officers injured.

The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office has identified the shooter as Kaizen Crossen. Witnesses say that Crossen was armed with a rifle and was wearing a bulletproof vest when he fatally shot a 20-year-old man in the neck.

The shooting happened around 11:30 a.m. on the 300 block of Myrtle Avenue, a few blocks from the Garden State Parkway.

“This individual had a long rifle and knew how to use it. A direct shot to the neck is not easy. I was a Marine and trained in combat and know how to shoot. This individual was ready to kill,” says Tony Agosto, with Virgo EMS.

When police officers arrived at the scene, Crossen opened fire on them, according to witnesses. The officers returned fire, hitting Crossen.

One officer was shot in the leg. Two others were injured in the shootout. Crossen was pronounced dead at the hospital.

“This individual had a rifle, a ton of ammo in a backpack and a bulletproof vest. He was ready for war. He was shooting any law enforcement that came into this way. It is a tragedy,” says Irvington City Councilman Paul Inman.

The three officers are expected to make a full recovery.

It was not immediately clear what led to the shooting, but it is believed that Crossen and the other victim may have had a dispute. That man was not armed, according to authorities.
