Monmouth County authorities say that they have solved a 25-year-old murder case involving the death of a 12-year-old girl.
The county prosecutor says that a 40-year-old North Carolina resident was arrested and charged in the death of 12-year-old Quiana Dees. Officials say that Dees was found in a vacant wooded lot early on May 2, 1992 suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. The seventh-grader had left her apartment the previous evening.
Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher Gramiccioni says that because the suspect was 13 years old at the time of the killing, her case will be tried as a juvenile. New Jersey laws at the time of the killing prevent the case from being tried in adult court with potentially harsher penalties.
The woman, who currently lives in Henderson, North Carolina, faces a maximum of four years in prison under juvenile laws.
The suspect’s name also cannot be released due to juvenile criminal laws.
She is awaiting extradition to New Jersey.
