Atlantic City man sentenced to 5.5 years in prison following expressway drug bust

An Atlantic City man was sentenced to five and a half years in New Jersey State Prison after police caught him driving recklessly with fentanyl, cocaine and animal tranquilizers.
James Angelozzi, 42, was sentenced Tuesday on one count of second-degree possession of controlled dangerous substances with intent to distribute.
The charges stem from a Sept. 8, 2023, traffic stop along the Atlantic City Expressway. Atlantic City police officers spotted Angelozzi speeding eastbound, swerving and changing lanes without signaling. When an officer turned on emergency lights, they saw Angelozzi toss a large duffel bag into the back seat.
After signing a consent-to-search form for the vehicle, officers discovered 110 wax folds containing a mixture of heroin, fentanyl, xylazine and 4-ANPP, along with 133 grams of cocaine.
While in custody, Angelozzi admitted there were additional drugs in his home and signed a second search warrant for his apartment.
Inside the residence, officers found another 74 wax folds of the same drug mixture and seven additional grams of cocaine.
Xylazine, commonly known as “tranq,” is a non-opioid animal tranquilizer often mixed with fentanyl to prolong its high. The combination can greatly increase the risk of fatal overdoses and severe tissue damage.
